From the Court to the Community: A Pirate's Path to Public Service

When I think back on my time at Ventura College from 2019 to 2022, it truly feels like the place where everything began to take shape for me. I came in as a student athlete, playing both indoor and beach volleyball, not fully realizing how much those years would impact my life. Being part of that program and eventually serving as team captain taught me more than just the game. It taught me grit, leadership, and how to push through challenges, especially during the uncertainty of the COVID years. Through it all, Coach Brad Lyons was a constant source of support and guidance. He believed in me, challenged me, and helped me grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. Receiving the Pirate Award my final year meant so much to me it was a moment where I felt seen for my character, leadership, and dedication, and it ultimately pushed me to continue striving for more.

After Ventura College, I carried those lessons with me to CSU Channel Islands, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. That decision was rooted in my desire to better understand

people, leadership, and the communities I wanted to serve. Around that same time, I made a big transition leaving the retail/ restaurant industry and stepping into a career with Interface Children and Family Services, where I’ve now been for nearly two years. Today, I’m about to complete my Master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration at California Lutheran University, graduating in May 2026. When I look at where I am now, I can trace so much of it back to Ventura College. It was more than just a school it was where I found my voice, built my confidence, and discovered the leader I wanted to become!
