From Night School to a Lifetime of Service: A Career in Construction, Infrastructure & Federal Management
It has been a while since attending night school on campus. Thank you to the staff for providing my career a great boost in construction management & inspection. I was an E5 with the Seabees at the Naval Construction Battalion Center working in engineering for the 31st Construction Regiment (1992 - 1995). Upon completion of my course work at Ventura College, I volunteered for a six-month assignment in Guantanamo Bay Cuba in support of the Cuban & Haitian Refugee Camps and ended up staying three years. Various assignments following led to eventual promotion to Engineering Chief during the 911 attacks, then like many others my life became very busy. Along the way was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer with a turn in roles focusing on Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management.
Completing a Bachelor of Science Liberal Studies in Management with a focus on Homeland Security, retiring from active duty in 2011. With follow on adventures in Environmental Restoration in the Exumas, Quality Assurance Management at Point Mugu, Graduate work at the University of Miami earning a Masters in Environmental Science & Policy, a second Masters online with University of Washington in Infrastructure Planning & Management while working as a Naval Facility Planner in Corpus Christi Texas, and completing my career managing Federal Courthouses and Office Buildings for GSA in South Florida, retiring in 2025 during the DOGE reduction of federal employees.
Wishing everyone All the Best & Continued Success,
John MacDougall, CWO3 CEC USN (RET)
